The Netherhall back row of Jonathan Burnyeat, Liam Thomason and Captain Phil Dixon were all over the park tackling everything that the visitors threw at them. More attacks by Keswick resulted in a Netherhall forward going in from the side which to everyone's surprise resulted in a penalty try award for the visitors. Netherhall travelled to Whitehaven and put up a good performance but went down 43-13 to a powerful well drilled team. The first twenty minutes were even at 3-3 with a penalty from the Whitehaven centre which was matched by Carl Philips.
The twenty minutes before half time were excellent for Whitehaven when they notched up 26 points. Whitehavens big forwards gave their speedy backs quick ball and firstly the fullback raced over for an excellent try which was converted by the centre. This was followed by another try for the speedy centre who scored out wide to make the score 15-3. Netherhall were conceding too many penalties at the rucks and were being punished by this lack of discipline.
Ryan Robertson and his fellow prop forward Lewis Tyson were working well in the tight and Phil Dixon lead from the front with some wonderful cover tackling. Despite this the home backs once again received quick ball and raced in for two quick tries which were both converted. Half time was 29-3 and it looked as if the Maryport side was going to be overrun.
A strong team talk at half time saw the visitors respond by taking the game to Whitehaven. The tenacious scrum half Tony Nicholson was instrumental in this with some aggressive running and darting which put Whitehavens defence under pressure.Whitehaven weathered the attacks and once again took advantage of more Netherhalls indiscipline who were still giving penalties away. The number 8 crashed over for a converted try on 60 minutes which was quickly added to by the winger which was also converted to make it 43-3. with twenty to go. Netherhall came back and Andrew Patterson made some powerful runs from second row and from such a run he fed inside to Philips who put out a good pass for the ever present Jonathan Burnyeat to score out wide. Whitehaven kicked off and were soon back in their own half when Patterson made another good break and was cut down 20 metres out, the ball was recycled and moved through hands before Liam Thomason crashed through the defence to score an unconverted try. Final score 43-13.
Whitehaven will be fighting for that top place by the end of the season but if Netherhall could just cut out the indiscipline which they conceded 15 penalties and had 3 players yellow carded they would be not far behind

conditions for the entire game and both sides contributed to the entertaining

time resulted in a forward battle on the home sides line and the Silloth prop
dived over for a converted try. Netherhall came back with some excellent play
by the back row of Phil Dixon, Jonathan Burnyeat and Andrew Renney, yards were
made down the left hand side and Silloth conceded a penalty. Tony Nicholson put

handling errors were frequent. Netherhall upped the tempo and put a lot of
pressure on the visitors defence but it was strong and held off every attack. Simon
Irving was attacking the Silloths line from fullback and made ground every time
but just could not make that final break. Silloths forwards appeared to tire
for a while which allowed Nicholson to run and weave and to bring in the homes
backs .This still not break the Silloth line and the visitors came back once
again to force Netherhall to concede yet another penalty which was converted to

Netherhall won a scrappy game against Wigton 24-15 which was probably their worst performance of the season.
Netherhall started off reasonably well with their bigger pack dominating the early exchanges and gaining territorial advantage for the first 15 minutes. Wigton were young well organised team who defended well. On 15 minutes Nicky Dixon shot down the blind side and fed Tony Nicholson who in turn fed Simon Irving on the wing who raced down the touch line before chipping the full back, a good bounce ended up with Nicholson who raced 20 metres to score a fine try.Steven Stoddart put over the kick to make it 7-0.
The next 15 minutes was a game of both defences being on top with good cover tackles from both teams. The stalemate was broken with the best try of the game when on the half way line a good drive by Andrew Renney lead to quick ball for the home team and Nicholson put Liam Vickers into a gap and he accelerated through it and put out a perfect pass to Sam Winter who dived over in the corner. The kick was put wide.Netherhall were on top and were camped on the Wigton Line and Jonathan Burnyeat picked up a loose ball and used his pace to race past the defence to score.Once again the conversion was missed.
Netherhall then appeared to relax and Wigton gained momentum and spent the minutes up to half time camped on the Netherhalls line.Eventually pressure told and a penalty was conceded which the stand off put over an excellent penalty to make it 17-3 at half time.
TheWigton team came out at the start of the second half and took control of the game and spent the next 15 minutes on the Home line.Only excellent tackling by the home team, especially Matty Todd kept the visitors at bay.Wigton s pressure eventually told and the big number 8 crashed over for a try which was converted by the stand off.Netherhall looked tired and off the pace and once again Wigton attacked down the right hand side and the backs moved the ball well and the right winger dived in at the corner to make the score 17-15. Netherhall were now giving away penalties with ill discipline and Wigton took advantage of this and were the better team.Eventually Netherhall appeared to wake up and good forward play by Simeon Gilmore and Burnyeat forced the home forward s back and Jamie Nicholson dived over to make it 22-15 Stoddart put over the conversion to make the final score 24-15.

Netherhall dominated in all areas of the play against, in the main, a young Cockermouth side. History was made for the Netherhall Club having a female referee officiating at one of their games. Play was held up from the 11th minute following a bad injury which required an ambulance with Cockermouth's Richard Lindsay suffering a broken ankle - best wishes for the quickest returns to richard. Carl Phillips will be disappointed that so many many fine breaks and passages of play didn't result in more scores. Back luck, bad final pass or unnecessary kicking squandered several more chances to score.
The improvement is clearly visible from the first half of the season with huge improvements in team strength, team spirit, camaraderie, fitness and coehesive team play, all resulting from the excellent training coaching sessions of Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Even greater turnouts in training will allow us to go from the current 85% to 100%.
All the 20 man squad played their part in attack and defence with Liam Vickers, Simon Irving, Stephen Stoddart, Phil Brown, Ross Tinkler, Jonathan Burnyeat and Phil Dixon making many breaks and Andrew Renney, as usual, tackled everything. Andrew Patterson put in a very promising performance following his conversion from backs to second row. I think everyone played well but the man of the match for me would have been shared by the Dixons, Nicky and Phil. I can only assume that the person who nominated Simeon Gillmore, good game as he had when replacing Lee Towers, wants a wall building cheaply.
Netherhall v Egremont Saturday 19th March 2011

Netherhall were narrowly beaten 13-15 by second in the league Egremont. The victory could have went either way even up to the last second by two evenly matched teams. Right from the kick off no quarter was asked and none given in an extremely tight and physical game.
Egremont started the best with there much bigger forwards who dominated the first twenty minutes with driving mauls and powerful drives. As usual Netherhalls defence was aggressive and well organised which stopped every attack in its tracks. The home back row of Dixon,Renney and Burnyeat were all over the field making tackle after tackle . This constant pressure eventually cracked the home defence when from a maul the back row forward picked and drove over for a try.Liam Nichols put over the conversion to make it 0-7. Eventually Netherhalls forwards made some ground with the strong running Ross Tinkler breaking tackles and making ground on the right. A quick ball from Tony Nicholson to the incoming fullback Liam Vickers nearly resulted in a try but the cover defence managed to tackle him into touch.
As half time approached Matty Todd picked and drove towards the line and was tackled high which resulted in a penalty to the home side. A quick tap was taken and Pickering in the centre was tackled short and the half time whistle went to leave the visitors winning 0-7.
The second half continued with both teams contesting every ball and eventually the pressure from the home forwards resulted in a penalty which Steven Stoddart put over to make it 3-7.
The visitors didn't play attractive football but the forward dominated style was effective and was causing the much smaller home forward problems. After 20 minutes the visitors once again score a try from a maul and Nicol's put the conversion over to make it 3-12. At this point a lesser team would have cracked but this try spurred on the Netherhall team and they started to take control of the forward battle, excellent work by the veteran Lee Towers and the bulky Mark Orchard in the front row started to take the game to the visitors and Tinkler and Todd were making breaks through their defence. After one such break Tinkler crashed the defensive line and raced 30 metre for a try under the posts Stoddart put over the kick.
Game now on with the home side trailing the visitors 10-12 with ten minutes to go. Nicol's put over a penalty to push the visitors clear but the home team responded with a penalty by Stoddart to make it 13-15.
The visitors forwards were tired and were now being out played by the Netherhall 8 lead inspirationally by captain Dixon who was immense all of the game, this forward domination led to a penalty conceded 35 metre out straight in front of the posts but Stoddart put it wide.In the last few minutes Burnyeat and Renney combined with Simon Irving who used his pace to beat 3 defenders before he was tackled which resulted in another penalty for Netherhall. With only seconds to go Stoddart in a similar position as his last once again put the kick wide and Egremont had won a very entertaining game 13-15.

Netherhall had an easy 49-0 win against local rivals in heavy conditions on
Saturday. The home forwards played the best they had done all season with
Lewis Tyson being awarded the man of the match after an impressive front
row performance. This performance was closely followed by the other seven
forwards who out played Silloth in every facet of the game.
It started well, when Andrew Renny raced blind and fed the nippy Tony
Nicholson who accelerated through a gap and fed the ball inside to Liam
Vickers who score a great try. Steven Stoddart put over the conversion.
Silloth kicked off but were soon back on their on line with some excellent
running by the big prop Tyson backed up by his speedy partner Ryan
Robertson, the ball was fed inside to Nicky Dixon who beat 2 tacklers and
fed the ball to his ever present brother Phil who crashed over to make it
12-0 after 15 minutes.Stoddart put over the kick to make it 14-0
Once again the ball was soon in the visitors 22 and Ross Tinkler attacked
the visitors defence to race through and score under the posts.Stoddart put
over the conversion 21-0 at half time. The second half continued as the first with the home forwards out gunning the visitors. The ever present back row of Netherhall of Burnyeat,Dixon and Renney were the first to every breakdown and this led to the 4th try. Burnyeat won the raced to the ball and popped it up to Renney who smashed through the defence to score ,Stoodart once again put over the kick.
Silloth tried to come back but the home defence snuffed out every attack
with the veteran Mathew Todd tackling any thing that moved. After one such
tackle Silloth spilled the ball and the powerful Tinkler picked up and sprinted 30 metre crashing through the full back to score ,Stoddart put over the kick. In the final minutes the ball was moved wide and Phil Brown raced past his defender and chipped over to win the race for the line.Stoddart put over the last kick to make the final score 49-0.
